Macau

In order to activate my work visa I had to leave and re-enter Hong Kong, this was a perfect excuse to go to Macau.  Just an hour ferry ride away, we departed on Sunday. A large majority of people had told us Macau wasn't very interesting, some even saying they literally got there turned around and came straight back.  Macau has a reputation for being the "Vegas" of Asia due to all the casinos there, however it doesn't have the same party culture, with alcohol barely being present and gambling being the sole purpose.   Determined to still make the best of it and with low expectations we set sail.  Because we couldn't go to Macau without seeing a casino I decided to choose the most ridiculous one.  The Venetian literally had a mini Venice inside.  We walked through the casino part for two seconds and then spent our time being blown away by how surreal this mini Venice was.  I truthfully enjoyed it because of how over the top it was!

Next we went downtown to the old area.  Macau use to be a Portuguese colony so you see and feel the influence everywhere.  Everything is in English, Chinese, and Portuguese, as well the architecture definitely makes you question whether you took a plane back to Europe without realizing it.  After a lovely day the last thing we needed to do was have an egg tart.  These delicious little treats are a typical Portuguese dessert, I actually had never even had one before but let me tell you those babies are deeee-licious!! If they had them in Hong Kong I would be overweight by now.

On our way back we made sure to activate our visa, this was after all the whole purpose of the trip! In the end I think people we're wrong to say Macau isn't fun, you just have to do your research and know what to expect (i.e. it's not Vegas).
